Welcome to Improve Memory Skills.
This website is a free step-by-step guide to memory improvement,
whether you're concerned about aging memory loss or you just want to
sharpen your brain and enhance your studying skills. It covers a
plethora of easy memory improvement techniques including brain training,
memory vitamins, memory exercises, and more.
If you are new to this site, select the image that
best defines you, or keep reading to find out more about the different
ways to boost your memory.
Memory is the mental activity of recalling
experiences and information. It is a complex process that involves many
different areas of the brain. Just like muscular strength, the more you
flex it - the stronger it will become. This means that very simple
memory exercises (like brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand)
can quickly forge new memory processes.
What Are The Different Types of Memory?
Your short term memory acts as a
temporary workspace, from which data is either processed and stored -
or thrown out for being irrelevant.
Your long term memory lasts for years,
both consciously (like education) and unconsciously (like phobias).
Science has many fancy names for different types of long term recall,
such as declarative memory (such as factual or emotional memories) and
procedural memory (such as how to ride a bicycle).
A rare but extraordinary type of memory is called
an eidetic (or photographic) memory,
defined by the ability to remember vivid images and sounds with
astonishing precision.
What Causes Memory Loss?
The most common cause of memory loss is aging, due
to deterioration of the brain tissues, loss of neurons, and decreased
blood flow to the brain.
The brain stops growing and starts shrinking at 20
years old, and from that point we experience a slowing down in our
ability to process new data. This translates to a poorer memory (not
technically memory loss as the name suggests).
Other more serious causes of memory loss include
Alzheimer's Disease, head trauma, and many others.
How Can I Improve My Memory Skills?
This website is all about improving memory skills
by focusing on three main areas of easy memory improvement:
Brain
training such as the online games created by scientists
over at Lumosity.
Puzzles and memory games
are excellent ways to keep your mind sharp as you age. It's also ideal
for students who want to enhance their memory further and achieve peak
mental performance.
Memory
improvement techniques such as mnemonic devices which turn dry
data into lively visual scenes which are much easier to recall.
Learning a couple of mnemonic systems can supercharge your memory
capacity for names, phone numbers and other random data.
Memory
vitamins such as a B vitamin complex to improve the
speed at which you process new information. Another popular supplement
for memory is fish oil containing Omega-3 fatty acids. For more details
see my list of the best memory vitamins and supplements.
